Awards and achievements include being the first to connect our planet's ocean to the Internet, (i.e., "Subsea IoT) for "The Aquarius Project" (See Aquarius pic above) that Bill conceived/ produced for The Jason Project, for Dr. Robert Ballard, famous oceanographer and discoverer of the RMS Titanic that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912.
SPONSORED BY TOP INDUSTRY, ACADEMIA, GOVERNMENT, NGO AND MEDIA
Dozens of leading industry, academia, government, and media organizations internationally. Sponsors included EDS (HPE), NASA (Live Space Communications Uplink to Russian Space Station MIR where astronaut Shannon Lucid greeted the kids where she had spent the last month conducting research), Continental Airlines, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, U.S. Dept. of Education, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Navy Nuclear NR-1 Sub, and U.S. Department of Environmental Protection Agency; and among many others, including many hundreds of dedicated people from around the world who helped make it possible.
PIONEERING TECH, MEDIA, ENTERTAINMENT, EDUCATION & COMMUNICATIONS
Sample pioneering "worlds first" technology innovations conceived and led by Bill as executive producer includes: the first IoT connected ship, with first-ever wireless ship-to-shore T1 microwave commlink (with mobile terrestrial satellite base redundancy); first underwater Subsea IoT, connecting "Aquarius", is the world's only underwater scientific habitat. (See picture above. The Aquarius is used for global research as well as by NASA to help train astronauts for Mars, located in a sand patch on the ocean floor, surrounded by Coral, adjacent to the deep coral reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.) Other Internet/IoT world firsts include the first underwater subsea website; “virtual portholes” streaming inside/outside cameras, 360˚VR tour, and Scientists/Aquanauts chatting with teachers and students from around the globe, live from the Aquarius base on the bottom of the ocean floor.
WORLD'S FIRST LIVE INTERNET "REALITY TV" SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION
The “Jason VII Project: Adapting to a Changing Sea” 1996 Climate Change Expedition and Sustainable STEM Curriculum Program presented by the Jason Education Foundation and Led by Dr. Bob Ballard. The mission was to find out more about how climate change and human development affect the coral reefs and other aquatic life, and how ecosystems work is essential to the sustainable health of the planet and humans who live here. The "Aquarius Project" used technology, media, and communications in exciting new ways, for the very first time, to extend the reach and global impact of both the Jason VII Project and the Jason Education Foundation.
FIRST EVER SUBSEA INTERNET STREAMING STEM DISTANCE LEARNING GLOBAL CLASSROOM
The live expedition produced in April of 1996 was also the world's first live Environmental Climate Change Scientific Expedition and STEM Curriculum Program broadcasted live over the Internet. Creator, Executive Producer for the first-ever live "reality Internet TV show" that aired the expedition adventure series and working scientific, environmental expedition with Dr. Bob, including daily programming with STEM and Environmental curriculum was the world's largest classroom. For the first time, kids (of all ages) including STEM teachers, students, and top environmental scientists from around the globe got to go along on a real scientific expedition and undersea adventure with Dr. Bob, all together, all at the same time, being broadcast, live over the Internet from the bottom of the ocean floor.
INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS
The participants for the Jason VII Project, with the help of the multi-million dollar Aquarius Internet Project and production, exploded 70X growth from just 75,000 the year before to over 5,000,000+ from across the globe - inspiring future generations of sustainable and responsible social entrepreneurs, scientists, technologists, engineers, educators, artists, media and global citizens to help create a better world for all.
